Central, Sheung Wan and Old Town Central
Short stop · 0.5–1 days
The sharpest first look at Hong Kong: office towers, temple lanes, wet markets, galleries and steep streets all packed together. Come for the Star Ferry arrival, Man Mo Temple, strong dining and a late drink; expect crowds around SoHo.
Tsim Sha Tsui, West Kowloon and Jordan
Short stop · 0.5–1 days
The most practical base for a first visit, with the harbour promenade, Star Ferry, M+, the Palace Museum and Jordan's late-night eating within easy reach. Stay here if you want to spend less time crossing the harbour and more time on foot.
Yau Ma Tei, Mong Kok and Sham Shui Po
Short stop · 1 day
For the dense, noisy Kowloon Hong Kong people picture: Temple Street, market streets, electronics and fabric stalls, old shop houses and very good inexpensive food. This is better for wandering and eating than ticking off individual sights.
Victoria Peak, Aberdeen and the South Side
Short stop · 1 day
This is the necessary correction to the skyscraper-only view of Hong Kong: ridge walks, harbour views, beaches and the working-waterfront feel of Aberdeen. Go early for the Peak, then choose one south-side direction rather than trying to cram in every beach and Stanley.
Wan Chai, Causeway Bay and Tai Hang
Short stop · 1 day
A more varied Hong Kong Island day than Central alone, mixing tram-lined streets, old markets, shopping madness and Tai Hang's calmer food-focused lanes. It is especially worthwhile for repeat visitors who want local eating without leaving the urban core.
Lantau: Tung Chung, Ngong Ping, Tai O and Mui Wo
Short stop · 1 day
Hong Kong's strongest full-day contrast: cable car and monastery at Ngong Ping, stilt-house Tai O, or the slower beach-and-village side around Mui Wo and Pui O. Pick Ngong Ping plus Tai O or the southern villages; adding Disneyland makes the day pointless.
Sai Kung Peninsula and Geopark Coast
Short stop · 1 day
The best case for treating Hong Kong as an outdoor destination, with hiking, beaches, boat trips and volcanic rock coastline reached via Sai Kung town. Give it a full day and choose one main activity—trail, beach or boat outing—not all three.
Cheung Chau
Short stop · 1 day
A compact, car-free island for harbour lanes, coastal walks, beach time and snacks, reached easily by ferry from Central. It works best as a relaxed day or simple overnight, not as a food pilgrimage or packed sightseeing mission.
Lamma Island
Short stop · 1 day
The easy island escape: ferry to Yung Shue Wan, walk the cross-island coastal route, eat at Sok Kwu Wan and ferry back. It is a decompression day rather than a headline attraction, which is exactly its appeal.
Sha Tin and the Northern New Territories
A quieter, more residential side of Hong Kong for temples, cycling, walled villages and food-led outings such as Yuen Long. Do not attempt to 'cover' the New Territories; choose one focus, such as Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery or a Yuen Long food crawl.
Hong Kong Disneyland and Penny's Bay
Short stop · 1 day
A polished, compact Disney park that deserves a dedicated day if it is a priority. It is not meaningfully combinable with Ngong Ping, Tai O or a general Lantau itinerary.
First-timer core
4 daysTsim Sha Tsui, West Kowloon and Jordan (Half day) → Central, Sheung Wan and Old Town Central (Half day) → Yau Ma Tei, Mong Kok and Sham Shui Po (1 day) → Lantau: Tung Chung, Ngong Ping, Tai O and Mui Wo (1 day) → Victoria Peak, Aberdeen and the South Side (1 day)
Stay in Kowloon or on Hong Kong Island and do not move hotels. This gets the harbour, old commercial core, dense Kowloon, one proper Lantau day and the Peak/south-side contrast without pretending Sai Kung or an outlying island can be squeezed in.

6 daysCentral, Sheung Wan and Old Town Central (1 day) → Wan Chai, Causeway Bay and Tai Hang (1 day) → Tsim Sha Tsui, West Kowloon and Jordan (1 day) → Yau Ma Tei, Mong Kok and Sham Shui Po (1 day) → Lantau: Tung Chung, Ngong Ping, Tai O and Mui Wo (1 day) → Lamma Island (1 day)
For travelers who want to eat and walk rather than race between landmarks. Give Hong Kong Island and Kowloon separate days, take Lantau at a sensible pace, then use Lamma as the deliberately low-key ferry-and-coastal-walk finale.
Plan this routeEight-day city and outdoors route
8 daysCentral, Sheung Wan and Old Town Central (1 day) → Wan Chai, Causeway Bay and Tai Hang (1 day) → Victoria Peak, Aberdeen and the South Side (1 day) → Tsim Sha Tsui, West Kowloon and Jordan (1 day) → Yau Ma Tei, Mong Kok and Sham Shui Po (1 day) → Sai Kung Peninsula and Geopark Coast (1 day) → Lantau: Tung Chung, Ngong Ping, Tai O and Mui Wo (1 day) → Cheung Chau (1 day)
The right longer trip for people who want Hong Kong’s urban intensity but refuse to leave without hiking or getting on a boat. Sai Kung needs a whole day; choose one of its trail, beach or boat options. Cheung Chau is the easier island day for coastal wandering and beach time.
Plan this routeFive-day family route with Disneyland
5 daysTsim Sha Tsui, West Kowloon and Jordan (1 day) → Central, Sheung Wan and Old Town Central (1 day) → Victoria Peak, Aberdeen and the South Side (1 day) → Hong Kong Disneyland and Penny's Bay (1 day) → Cheung Chau (1 day)
A family-friendly version that keeps transfers short and treats Disneyland as the full-day commitment it is. Cheung Chau supplies the car-free ferry-and-beach reset; skip Ngong Ping and Tai O on this trip rather than turning every day into transport.
