Eat beyond the pedestrian-zone default: Bonn’s most rewarding everyday dining is in Südstadt for polished, lived-in café-and-dinner addresses, Poppelsdorf for informal student-facing restaurants and beer gardens, and Altstadt for bars and a more relaxed evening. Zentrum is useful for the Marktplatz and quick meals between sights, but the restaurants closest to the main shopping routes are often less distinctive; the federal district is a weak choice for spontaneous dinner after office hours.
Rheinischer Sauerbraten: the Rhineland’s marinated pot roast, often served with a sweet-savoury raisin sauce, potato dumplings or potato pancakes and red cabbage. · Himmel un Ääd (“heaven and earth”): mashed potato and apple, commonly paired with fried onions and black pudding—a hearty regional classic. · Reibekuchen: crisp potato fritters, traditionally eaten with apple sauce; look for them as a market or casual snack rather than a formal dinner. · Bönnsch: Bonn’s local beer, worth ordering in preference to treating nearby Cologne’s Kölsch as the city’s own signature. · Ahr wine: Bonn is a sensible place to drink wines from the nearby Ahr valley, particularly red Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir). · Kaffee und Kuchen: make room for an afternoon coffee-and-cake stop, especially in Südstadt or Poppelsdorf, rather than saving every meal for the evening.
