Hanoi
Base · 1–3 nights
Vietnam’s best opening city: Old Quarter intensity, serious street food, coffee, lakes and enough museums to slow you down. It is also the practical launch point for the north, but do not mistake it for a quiet capital.
Ninh Binh & Tam Cốc
Base · 2 nights
Karst cliffs, paddies and river trips deliver the limestone drama of the north without committing to a cruise. Stay around Tam Cốc for one or two nights; a Hanoi day trip is the rushed version.
Hạ Long Bay & Cát Bà
Base · 2 nights
The seascape is spectacular, but the choice matters: Hạ Long is built around cruises, while Cát Bà works better for independent kayaking, hiking and a less packaged stay. Skip the cheapest day cruises.
Sapa or Hà Giang
Base · 4 nights
Vietnam’s mountain-country detour: terraces and village trekking around developed Sapa, or bigger, wilder limestone roads in Hà Giang. Pick one—Hà Giang rewards time and a capable driver; it is not a casual scooter loop.
Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng
Base · 3 nights
The place for travelers who want caves, jungle and active days rather than another old town. It is a real detour, so give it at least two or three nights and only go if you will actually hike, swim or cave.
Huế
Base · 2 nights
The former imperial capital has Vietnam’s most legible royal history: Citadel, tombs, river and a food culture worth treating seriously. Give it two nights; a hurried transit stop misses the point.
Hội An
Base · 3 nights
A compact trading port for food, cycling, tailoring and nearby beach time, reached easily from Đà Nẵng airport. Its Old Town is beautiful but overrun in the evening, so sleep outside the core and use the daylight hours well.
Central Coast
Choose Quy Nhơn, Nha Trang or Phan Rang only when you genuinely want several beach days, seafood or water time. Nha Trang is convenient but high-rise and package-heavy; Quy Nhơn and Phan Rang are the more characterful alternatives.
Ho Chi Minh City
Base · 2–3 nights
Saigon is Hanoi’s hotter, faster commercial counterweight: excellent neighborhood eating, late nights, museums and constant motion. Use it as a proper city stop, not merely the airport before the Mekong or an island.
Mekong Delta
Base · 2 nights
Cần Thơ, Bến Tre and Châu Đốc offer canals, orchards and a slower riverine south shaped by Khmer and Cham influences. Overnight rather than taking a contrived long day tour from Ho Chi Minh City; floating markets are no longer the main event.
Phú Quốc or Côn Đảo
Pick Phú Quốc for easy flights and uncomplicated resort recovery, accepting aggressive development; pick Côn Đảo for quieter beaches, marine scenery and prison history, accepting higher costs and thinner services. They are different holidays, not interchangeable islands.
Northern Vietnam without internal flights
8 daysHanoi (3 nights) → Ninh Binh & Tam Cốc (2 nights) → Hạ Long Bay & Cát Bà (2 nights) → Hanoi (1 night)
The right first northern route if you want cities, karsts and water without losing days to airports. Go directly from Ninh Binh to the bay where possible; adding Sapa or Hà Giang turns this compact trip into a bus-heavy scramble.

12 daysHanoi (3 nights) → Ninh Binh & Tam Cốc (2 nights) → Hội An (3 nights) → Huế (2 nights) → Ho Chi Minh City (2 nights)
A sensible cross-country introduction, not a fantasy of seeing everything. Fly Hanoi–Đà Nẵng and treat it as a transfer day; take the scenic rail or road route between Hội An and Huế, then fly south. It gives each region a distinct mood without pretending Vietnam is small.

14 daysHanoi (3 nights) → Ninh Binh & Tam Cốc (2 nights) → Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng (3 nights) → Huế (2 nights) → Hội An (3 nights) → Hanoi (1 night)
For travelers who would rather cave and trek than collect beach resorts. Phong Nha is the point of the route, not a box to tick: reaching it via Đồng Hới takes commitment, so skip it unless you will use the active days. Finish with a domestic flight back to Hanoi for departure.

21 daysHanoi (3 nights) → Sapa or Hà Giang (4 nights) → Ninh Binh & Tam Cốc (2 nights) → Hạ Long Bay & Cát Bà (2 nights) → Hội An (3 nights) → Huế (2 nights) → Ho Chi Minh City (3 nights) → Mekong Delta (2 nights)
A real country-scale trip for travelers with three weeks and patience for long transfers. Pick Sapa or Hà Giang, not both; fly the major north–central–south leaps; and leave the north–south train for people who actively want a 30-plus-hour rail experience. Add an island only by cutting the mountains or Mekong, not by squeezing every stop thinner.
