Denver
Base · 2 days
The useful arrival and departure base for museums, restaurants, breweries, Red Rocks and a couple of car-free days. It is a city with mountain views, not a substitute for staying in the mountains.
Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park
Base · 2–3 days
Base in Estes Park for dawn access to Bear Lake, Glacier Gorge, Moraine Park and Trail Ridge Road rather than burning hours commuting from Denver. The town is touristy, but the park merits two full days.
Summit County
Base · 2 days
Breckenridge, Frisco, Dillon and Keystone make up Colorado's most convenient ski-and-summer-resort cluster. Frisco is the sensible base for location and value; Breckenridge is for nightlife and lift access.
Aspen, Snowmass and the Roaring Fork Valley
Base · 2–4 days
Come for Maroon Bells, serious hiking, skiing, strong restaurants and Glenwood Canyon; stay in Carbondale or Glenwood Springs if Aspen rates are absurd. This is Colorado at its most polished and expensive.
Colorado Springs, Manitou Springs and Pikes Peak
Base · 2 days
A practical Front Range stop for Garden of the Gods, Manitou Springs and the Pikes Peak Cog Railway. It delivers big scenery without requiring a wilderness-heavy itinerary.
Salida, Buena Vista and the Arkansas River Valley
Base · 2 days
A low-key, practical mountain base for rafting, fishing, hot springs and Sawatch-range views without resort-town pricing. Choose it when you want outdoor days over boutique shopping and nightlife.
Great Sand Dunes and the San Luis Valley
Short stop · 1 day
Colorado's most otherworldly landscape: climb or sled enormous dunes, catch Medano Creek in season and stay for dark skies. It is remote and exposed, so it works best as a deliberate overnight rather than a rushed detour.
Durango, Mesa Verde and the Southwest
Base · 2 days
Use Durango as the workable base for the Durango & Silverton railroad, Mesa Verde's cliff dwellings and the San Juan Mountains. Mesa Verde deserves a full day, not a Denver day trip disguised as an itinerary.
Telluride, Ouray and Ridgway
Base · 2 days
The San Juans deliver Colorado's most dramatic mountain driving, waterfalls, hot springs and high-country hiking. Telluride is the splurge; Ridgway is the calmer, cheaper base; Ouray is compact and hot-springs focused.
Grand Junction, Fruita and Palisade
Base · 2 days
A warm, dry Western Slope base for Colorado National Monument, Fruita singletrack, Palisade wineries and orchard stands. Pick it for red rock, biking and harvest-season food rather than alpine scenery.
Boulder and the Northern Front Range
Boulder offers Flatirons hiking, cafés, cycling and breweries with easy Denver access; Fort Collins is the more relaxed beer-and-bikes alternative. It is a good soft landing before the mountains, not a mountain-town replacement.
Classic first Colorado
7 daysDenver (2 days) → Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park (3 days) → Summit County (2 days)
The clean first-timer route: city time and acclimatization, two proper park days from Estes Park, then a convenient mountain finish in Frisco or Breckenridge. Do not dilute it by adding Aspen or Colorado Springs.

9 daysDenver (2 days) → Colorado Springs, Manitou Springs and Pikes Peak (2 days) → Salida, Buena Vista and the Arkansas River Valley (2 days) → Great Sand Dunes and the San Luis Valley (1 day) → Durango, Mesa Verde and the Southwest (2 days)
A strong southbound road trip for travelers who want Garden of the Gods, rafting country, the dunes and Mesa Verde rather than another resort stay. Great Sand Dunes is a one-night stop only if you accept a long drive onward to Durango.

10 daysDenver (2 days) → Aspen, Snowmass and the Roaring Fork Valley (4 days) → Grand Junction, Fruita and Palisade (2 days) → Denver (2 days)
Best for travelers who care as much about Maroon Bells, hot springs and good restaurants as they do about hiking. Base in Carbondale or Glenwood Springs unless paying Aspen prices is part of the plan; leave time for Colorado National Monument and Palisade rather than treating them as roadside extras.

For travelers with two weeks who want a genuine cross-section of Colorado: alpine national park, resort mountains, Roaring Fork polish, Western Slope red rock and the San Juans. This is a driving trip, not a slow holiday; use an open-jaw flight from Durango if the fare and one-way car fee are sensible.
