Pokhara
Base · 1–3 days
Gandaki’s indispensable logistics base: Phewa Lake, Sarangkot, the Peace Pagoda and enough hotels, gear shops and transport to make trekking plans workable. Lakeside is convenient rather than authentic, but it is where most first visits should begin and end.
Ghandruk, Ghorepani and Poon Hill
Base · 2–4 days
The best entry-level Annapurna trek: Gurung villages, rhododendron forest and a genuinely big sunrise view from Poon Hill. Expect lots of stone steps and peak-season crowds; this is popular because it works.
Annapurna Base Camp and the Sanctuary
Base · 8 days
A serious teahouse trek into a glacial bowl beneath Annapurna I and Machhapuchhre, without committing to a 5,000 m pass. It is stair-heavy, busy and weather-sensitive, but still the region’s strongest high-reward trek for a 7–10 day window.
Lower Mustang: Jomsom, Marpha and Muktinath
Base · 3–4 days
The accessible trans-Himalayan side of Gandaki: dry Kali Gandaki scenery, Thakali food and orchards, and the major pilgrimage site at Muktinath. Base in Marpha if possible; Jomsom is useful for transport, not atmosphere.
Upper Mustang and Lo Manthang
Base · 7 days
Gandaki’s most distinct cultural landscape: ochre cliffs, cave sites, monasteries and the walled former kingdom of Lo. Go for Tibetan Buddhist culture and high-desert landscapes, not for a cheap or easy road trip—permits, guide arrangements and rough transfers are fundamental to the experience.
Manang, Tilicho Lake and the Annapurna Circuit
The eastern Annapurna is for travelers who want an acclimatization journey and a real high-altitude objective, not a scenic drive from Pokhara. Manang’s dry plateau, Tilicho Lake and Thorong La need time, fitness and conservative pacing.
Mardi Himal, Dhampus and Australian Camp
The compact ridge-and-forest trekking country north of Pokhara, with close Machhapuchhre views for much less time than Annapurna Base Camp. Dhampus or Australian Camp works as a quick overnight; Mardi itself deserves several walking days.
Bandipur
Base · 1–2 days
A compact hill town with a walkable old center, Newar-influenced architecture, ridge views and Siddha Cave nearby. It is the right antidote to Pokhara’s resort feel, but one night is enough unless you plan to walk.
Begnas Lake
Base · 2 days
A quieter eastern Pokhara Valley escape for lake time without Lakeside’s traffic and activity-selling. Use it for a calm overnight or a slow day, not as a replacement for Pokhara’s trekking services.
Gorkha and Manakamana
Pair Gorkha Durbar’s history and hill views with Manakamana’s cable-car-accessed pilgrimage culture on the Kathmandu–Pokhara corridor. Both are worthwhile cultural stops, but neither warrants a long stay unless you are hiking locally.
Manaslu Circuit and Tsum Valley
The more remote, permit-driven alternative to Annapurna: deep valleys, Tibetan-influenced communities and a longer expedition rhythm around Manaslu. Treat it as its own 14–20 day trek, not something to bolt onto a Pokhara itinerary.
Pokhara and the Annapurna foothills
7 daysPokhara (3 days) → Ghandruk, Ghorepani and Poon Hill (2 days) → Pokhara (1 day) → Bandipur (1 day)
The sensible first visit for travelers who want Himalayan village walking without pretending a high trek fits into a week. Pokhara provides weather and transport slack; Bandipur only makes sense if you are continuing overland toward Kathmandu.
Plan this routePoon Hill trek with a proper Pokhara finish
10 daysPokhara (2 days) → Ghandruk, Ghorepani and Poon Hill (4 days) → Pokhara (2 days) → Bandipur (2 days)
The low-risk classic for first-time trekkers: enough time for Ghorepani, Poon Hill and Ghandruk without compressing transfer days into fantasy timings. Finish with Pokhara recovery, then Bandipur rather than another rushed mountain stop.
Plan this routeAnnapurna Base Camp at a humane pace
14 daysPokhara (2 days) → Annapurna Base Camp and the Sanctuary (8 days) → Pokhara (2 days) → Begnas Lake (2 days)
For fit trekkers who want one substantial Himalayan objective rather than a messy province-wide sampler. Eight days in the Sanctuary allows a sensible ascent and descent; the final lake stay is deliberately quiet after the trail.
Plan this routeLower and Upper Mustang road-and-walk journey
18 daysPokhara (2 days) → Lower Mustang: Jomsom, Marpha and Muktinath (4 days) → Upper Mustang and Lo Manthang (7 days) → Lower Mustang: Jomsom, Marpha and Muktinath (3 days) → Pokhara (2 days)
The route for travelers who care more about Tibetan Buddhist culture, dry high-desert landscapes and slow road travel than ticking off trek mileage. It gives Lo Manthang real time and retains buffers for rough roads and weather-sensitive transport.
