Pohnpei
FSM’s best all-round first stop: rainforest roads, waterfalls, sakau culture, lagoon trips and diving all work from a Kolonia base. It is wet, muddy and lightly organized, but it gives non-divers as much reason to come as divers.
Nan Madol and Temwen Island
A tidal maze of basalt-walled ceremonial islets on Pohnpei’s southeast coast, and the country’s essential cultural sight. Go with a local guide and time it around the tide; this is rough-ground archaeology, not a polished ruins park.
Pohnpei Outer Lagoon and P-Pass
The reef-and-mangrove side of Pohnpei, with boat days for diving, kayaking and fishing. P-Pass is a serious offshore reef break, not somewhere to improvise a beginner surf session.
Yap Proper
Come for village roads, stone-money banks, old paths and a living culture that still expects visitors to observe local rules. Colonia is only the practical base; the point is getting out to hosted village and cultural sites.
Yap's Channels and Outer Reef
One of the Pacific’s genuinely great manta destinations, with resident rays and excellent wall and channel diving. Dive conditions, currents and tides decide the day’s plan, not a wish list.
Chuuk Lagoon and Weno
A wreck-diving destination first and foremost: Japanese WWII ships, aircraft and cargo remains make this an underwater museum with real depth and complexity. Weno is the service base, not the attraction; give the lagoon a proper week if you come.
Kosrae
FSM’s quiet green island for uncrowded reefs, mangroves, paddling and slow driving rather than resort life. Stay long enough to accept its limited restaurants and nightlife as the point, not a flaw.
Lelu Ruins and Yela Ka
Kosrae’s best land counterweight to reef time: Lelu’s stone settlement adds historical depth, while Yela Ka is for swamp forest and mangrove ecology. Arrange guides ahead; these are small-scale, weather-dependent outings.
Ulithi and the Yap Outer Islands
Remote atolls, traditional navigation heritage and almost no visitor infrastructure. This is a specifically arranged expedition, not an easy extension from Yap Proper.
Pohnpei properly
8 nightsPohnpei → Nan Madol and Temwen Island → Pohnpei Outer Lagoon and P-Pass → Pohnpei
The strongest first FSM trip, especially for travelers who do not want a dive-only holiday. One base keeps logistics sane and leaves enough slack for rain, tides and boat cancellations.
Plan this routeChuuk Lagoon dive week
9-10 nightsChuuk Lagoon and Weno
For qualified divers who want wrecks, not a general-interest sampler. Spend six dive days in the lagoon and keep one or two final no-dive buffer nights in Weno.
Plan this routePohnpei and Kosrae slow trip
14-16 nightsPohnpei → Nan Madol and Temwen Island → Pohnpei Outer Lagoon and P-Pass → Kosrae → Lelu Ruins and Yela Ka
The best two-state route for rainforest, archaeology, reefs and quiet rather than maximum dive count. Give both islands a real week; Kosrae is wasted as an overnight stop.
Plan this routeThe serious FSM circuit
21-24 nightsYap Proper → Yap's Channels and Outer Reef → Chuuk Lagoon and Weno → Pohnpei → Nan Madol and Temwen Island → Kosrae → Lelu Ruins and Yela Ka
For experienced Pacific travelers willing to organize their trip around flight days and accept backtracking. Yap supplies culture and mantas, Chuuk the wrecks, Pohnpei the broadest land-and-sea mix, and Kosrae the quiet finish.
