Nairobi
Base · 1–2 days
East Africa’s most useful gateway, but worth two nights for Nairobi National Park, strong food and coffee, museums and contemporary city life. Traffic is brutal, so stay in the neighborhood you actually plan to use.
Maasai Mara and the Mara Conservancies
Base · 3–4 days
The essential Kenyan safari for big cats, open plains and the migration in season. Use a conservancy if you value fewer vehicles and better guiding over simply being in the famous reserve.
Amboseli and the Chyulu Hills
Base · 2 days
Come for huge-tusked elephants and the occasional clean Kilimanjaro backdrop; stay two nights rather than treating it as a rushed add-on. The Chyulu Hills add lava landscapes and quieter, more private safari country.
The Rift Valley: Naivasha, Hell’s Gate and Lake Nakuru
Base · 3 days
Kenya’s best easy road circuit from Nairobi: boat time on Naivasha, walking or cycling in Hell’s Gate, then rhino and giraffe at Nakuru. It is more active and varied than a pure game-drive itinerary, but Nakuru is not a substitute for the Mara.
Laikipia, Ol Pejeta and Mount Kenya
Base · 3 days
A smarter second safari than another Mara repeat: rhino conservation, ranchland conservancies, walking and riding, with Mount Kenya as a serious trekking objective. Expect activity and conservancy costs to push the price up.
Samburu, Buffalo Springs and Shaba
Base · 3 days
Arid northern country with the northern-specials—Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk and Beisa oryx—and far more dramatic light than lushness. Fly from Nairobi if time matters; the road transfer is long.
Tsavo East and Tsavo West
Base · 2 days
Vast red-dust elephant country between Nairobi and the coast, built around scale, lava landscapes and long drives rather than constant close sightings. It makes sense on an overland safari-to-beach route, not as a Mara substitute.
Mombasa
Short stop · 1 day
A humid, hectic port city with Old Town, Fort Jesus and Kenya’s best coastal urban food rather than polished resort appeal. Give it a night or two for history and texture, then sleep on the beach.
Diani and the South Coast
Base · 4 days
The easiest beach finish after safari: a long sandy coast, broad accommodation choice, reef trips and straightforward flights through Ukunda. It is convenient and comfortable, though some stretches are distinctly resort-heavy.
Kilifi, Watamu and Malindi
A slower, more spread-out coast than Diani, with creek stays in Kilifi, marine life around Watamu and established resort life in Malindi. Best when you want to settle in rather than tick off the coast in two days.
Lamu Archipelago
Kenya’s most distinctive Swahili coastal world: dhow sailing, car-free lanes, coral-rag houses, seafood and days that are deliberately unstructured. It is a special second-trip choice, but current official travel advice should be checked carefully before planning it.
Western Kenya: Kisumu, Lake Victoria and Kakamega Forest
A greener, less safari-centric Kenya of lake fish, Luo food, birdlife and equatorial forest walks. Go for a broader view of the country or as part of an Uganda-bound trip, not for a bargain Big Five substitute.
Classic first visit: city, flagship safari and beach
9 daysNairobi (2 days) → Maasai Mara and the Mara Conservancies (3 days) → Diani and the South Coast (4 days)
The cleanest first Kenya trip: Nairobi is worth a proper start, the Mara gets two full game-drive days, and Diani provides an uncomplicated finish. Fly Nairobi–Mara and Mara–Diani via Nairobi/Wilson where necessary; driving to the Mara turns too much of a short holiday into transfer time.
Plan this routeRift Valley road safari with Mara and Amboseli
10 daysNairobi (1 day) → The Rift Valley: Naivasha, Hell’s Gate and Lake Nakuru (3 days) → Maasai Mara and the Mara Conservancies (3 days) → Nairobi (1 day) → Amboseli and the Chyulu Hills (2 days)
For travelers who want more than sitting in a safari vehicle: Rift Valley walks, cycling and lake time before the Mara’s serious wildlife viewing, then Amboseli’s elephants and Kilimanjaro gamble. It is feasible with a driver-guide but busy; every road move costs at least half a day, and the Nairobi stop is a useful reset rather than dead time.

12 daysNairobi (2 days) → Amboseli and the Chyulu Hills (2 days) → Tsavo East and Tsavo West (2 days) → Diani and the South Coast (4 days) → Mombasa (1 day) → Nairobi (1 day)
This is the logical southern circuit, not a diluted attempt to add the Mara as well. Amboseli supplies the iconic elephants, Tsavo delivers red-dust scale and volcanic scenery, and Diani earns a real beach stay. Use a private driver-guide for the safari section; Mombasa is for Old Town and food, while the final Nairobi night protects an international departure.

14 daysNairobi (2 days) → Samburu, Buffalo Springs and Shaba (3 days) → Laikipia, Ol Pejeta and Mount Kenya (3 days) → Maasai Mara and the Mara Conservancies (4 days) → Nairobi (2 days)
A stronger wildlife itinerary than trying to cram Samburu, Amboseli, the Mara and the coast into two weeks. Samburu gives you the northern-specials and dry-country light; Laikipia adds rhino conservation and active safari options; the Mara then supplies the classic predator-and-plains finale. Fly to Samburu if possible, drive south through Laikipia, then fly to the Mara via Nairobi rather than sacrificing a day or more to road transfers.
