Lamu Old Town
Base · 1–3 nights
The cultural core: dense coral-stone lanes, waterfront life, markets, mosques and the fort. Stay here for the museums and daily rhythm, not for a beach holiday.
Shela
Base · 2–4 nights
The best all-round base combines a serious dune-backed beach with easy access to Old Town by boat or beach walk. It is the practical choice for travelers who want both beach time and Lamu’s cultural side.
Kizingoni
Base · 3 nights
A quieter southern-western stretch beyond Shela, with empty sand, dark skies and lodge-or-villa seclusion. Come prepared to trade restaurant choice and spontaneity for proper downtime.
Kipungani and Matondoni
Base · 4 nights
The remote western end of Lamu Island: fishing-village country and nearly empty beach, best reached by pre-arranged boat. This is for doing very little well, rather than using it as a sightseeing base.
Manda Island
Base · 4–6 nights
Opposite Lamu Town, Manda holds the airport, mangroves and a handful of private lodges. It works for a self-contained retreat or an easy airport transfer, but not as a substitute for staying in Old Town.
Takwa Ruins
Short stop · 1 day
A tide-timed half-day boat trip through mangrove channels to the remains of a 15th–16th-century Swahili settlement. Go for the mosque, wells, coral-stone ruins and the journey itself; interpretation is light.
Minimum worthwhile first visit
4 nightsShela (4 nights) → Lamu Old Town (1 day trip) → Takwa Ruins (half-day trip)
For a short first visit, keep one base in Shela rather than wasting time on hotel moves. Use Old Town for the essential cultural day and Takwa for the one excursion that earns its boat transfer.
Plan this routeClassic heritage-and-beach first trip
7 nightsLamu Old Town (3 nights) → Shela (4 nights) → Takwa Ruins (half-day trip from Shela)
The best-balanced first itinerary. Old Town gives you the museums, market and waterfront rhythm; Shela delivers the beach, dunes and dhow time without making the trip feel like a resort stay.

9 nightsLamu Old Town (3 nights) → Shela (3 nights) → Takwa Ruins (half-day trip from Shela) → Kizingoni (3 nights)
For travelers who like slow destinations and are happy with fewer restaurant choices at the end. Put the flexible outings in Shela, then finish at Kizingoni when the goal is empty sand, long walks and no schedule.
Plan this routeDeep-core archipelago stay
12-14 nightsLamu Old Town (2 nights) → Shela (2 nights) → Takwa Ruins (half-day trip from Shela) → Kipungani and Matondoni (4 nights) → Manda Island (4-6 nights)
A deliberately unambitious long stay for people who want sailing, beach time and lodge stillness rather than constant movement. It stays within the practical Lamu–Manda core and avoids treating remote northern islands as casual add-ons.
