Visas & entry
Croatia is in the Schengen Area. EU/EEA/Swiss citizens can enter with a valid ID card or passport; visitors from visa-exempt countries such as the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand can generally stay up to 90 days in any 180-day Schengen period. Check current Croatian/Schengen rules for your passport before travel.
Getting in
- Dubrovnik Airport, Čilipi: The obvious gateway for Dubrovnik, Cavtat/Konavle, the Elaphiti and southern islands. It is about 25 km from Dubrovnik; use the airport bus, transfer or taxi rather than renting a car immediately unless you are heading straight to Pelješac or Neretva.
- Split Airport: Useful for a north-to-south Dalmatian trip, especially if Pelješac, Korčula, Ploče or the Neretva Delta are part of a wider itinerary. It is not a practical airport for a short Dubrovnik-only break: the onward road journey is long.
- Dubrovnik Gruž Port: The working sea gateway for seasonal fast ferries from Split, Hvar, Korčula, Mljet and nearby islands, plus local Elaphiti ferries. Stay in Gruž or arrange a transfer if you have an early ferry; Old Town accommodation is not port-convenient.
- Ploče ferry port: A useful mainland entry point for the Neretva Delta and the car ferry to Trpanj on Pelješac. It matters mainly to drivers and travelers arriving along the coast from Split/Makarska rather than to Dubrovnik-based visitors.
Getting around
Use Dubrovnik as a base only for the city, Lokrum, Cavtat/Konavle, the Elaphiti and possibly Ston; it is not a sensible base for sleeping on Korčula or Mljet. Fast ferries are excellent in the main season but are seasonal, weather-sensitive and usually passenger-only, so book accommodation around confirmed sailing days. Rent a car after leaving Dubrovnik for Pelješac, Neretva or eastern Mljet; it is more burden than benefit in Dubrovnik, where parking is scarce and costly. Korčula Town, Lopud and Mljet National Park can work without a car, but island interiors and remote coves do not.
Money
Croatia uses the euro (€). Cards are widely accepted in Dubrovnik, Korčula Town, hotels and proper restaurants, but carry cash for small island businesses, market stalls, rural konobas, parking and occasional boat operators. Tipping is not mandatory; round up for coffee/taxis and leave roughly 5–10% for good restaurant service if it is not already reflected in the bill.
Daily budget · EUR (€)
- Value
- €95–155 shoulder season; €135–210 in July–August
- Mid-range
- €190–320 shoulder season; €270–450 in July–August
- High-end
- €500–900+ shoulder season; €750–1,400+ in July–August
- Per-person daily figures exclude international transport and assume two people sharing a room.
- July–August accommodation—especially Dubrovnik Old Town, Ploče and waterfront Korčula—is the main budget breaker. Lapad, Gruž, Cavtat, Orebić and inland Pelješac are smarter-value bases.
- Use cars selectively: they are worthwhile for Pelješac and the Neretva Delta, but expensive, parking-heavy and largely unnecessary in Dubrovnik.
- Fast ferries are manageable individually but add up across an island-hopping trip: allow roughly €25 Dubrovnik–Mljet and €30 Dubrovnik–Korčula one way, plus port transfers and occasional boat trips.
- Oysters, fish sold by weight, Dingač tastings, oyster-farm boats and Dubrovnik rooftop dining are the usual mid-range-to-splurge traps.
- Solo travelers should add roughly €45–140 per day because rooms and apartments are seldom priced well for one.
Eating well
- Book sought-after Dubrovnik restaurants, oyster-farm lunches and serious Pelješac wineries ahead in July and August.
- Use a car for Pelješac and the Neretva Delta if food is the point; winery villages, oyster beds and river restaurants are awkward by public transport.
- Ask the price before ordering fish sold by weight, and treat premium seafood, oysters and Dingač tastings as splurge items.
- In October, buy mandarins from Delta roadside stalls and build a meal around the harvest rather than expecting a beach-day itinerary.
Book before you land
Dubrovnik Summer Festival performances, especially popular courtyard, fortress and headline productions in July–August · Peak-season Dubrovnik–Mljet–Korčula fast-ferry departures when they are essential to an accommodation transfer
- Do Dubrovnik’s walls at opening time or late afternoon. Midday in July and August means heat, cruise crowds, polished-stone glare and little shade.
- Choose your base by transport, not romance: Gruž for ferries, Lapad for space and beaches, Cavtat for airport convenience, Korčula Town for a car-free island stay, and Orebić/Trstenik for a driving-based Pelješac trip.
- Check ferry timetables before booking island hotels, then recheck shortly before travel. Seasonal catamarans do not necessarily run daily, many do not take cars, and bura or jugo can disrupt services.
- The Pelješac Bridge avoids the Bosnia-Herzegovina Neum corridor when driving from the rest of Croatia to Pelješac, but it does not make the peninsula quick: roads remain winding and stops add up.
- Do not combine winery tastings with driving on Pelješac. Use a driver, taxi or stay close to the winery village; Dingač and Postup roads are steep and narrow.
- On islands, buy water, snacks and any essential supplies before heading to remote coves or smaller villages. Restaurant, taxi and shop choice contracts sharply outside the main summer season.
Entry rules change — verify visa requirements for your passport before booking this region.
Season by season
December–February
Mild by northern-European standards but wet, windy and short-dayed; Dubrovnik stays functional, while fast ferries, island restaurants and Mljet National Park largely shut down.
low-cost Dubrovnik breaksmuseums and restaurantsuncrowded Old Town walks
Do not plan this as a county-wide coastal or island itinerary: weather can disrupt boats and most island choices disappear.
March–May
March is variable and quiet; April begins to wake up; May brings long days, green landscapes, open restaurants and increasingly useful ferry schedules.

Sea temperatures are cool until late spring, and rain or bura/jugo winds can still disrupt smaller boat services.
June–August
June is warm and busy but manageable; July and August are very hot, sunny and fully operational for swimming, ferries and island logistics.

July–August bring the county's highest room rates and crowds; Dubrovnik's Old Town is especially punishing from late morning through afternoon, and popular boats and restaurants need advance booking.
September–November
September keeps warm water and frequent ferries after the peak; October is ideal for wine country and harvest food but more unsettled; November is quiet, wet and increasingly seasonal.

Island sailings and accommodation options thin as autumn advances; by November, favour Dubrovnik and mainland food stops over a beach-and-boat itinerary.
Events worth planning around
Dubrovnik Summer Festival · Usually mid-July to late August; in 2026, July 10–August 25. · Dubrovnik Old Town
Performances fill courtyards, squares and fortresses, raising demand for central rooms; reserve popular shows and Dubrovnik accommodation early.
Neretva Lađa Marathon · Second Saturday in August. · Neretva Delta, from Metković toward Ploče
The traditional-boat race is a lively local spectacle but brings major crowds, road/river disruption and tighter accommodation around the Delta.
What to eat
Eat this county as two linked cuisines: Adriatic seafood and island pantry along the coast, then river fish, frogs and citrus in the Neretva Delta. Base oyster meals in Ston/Mali Ston, drink Pelješac reds and Korčula whites where they are grown, and do not mistake Dubrovnik’s tourist menus for the region’s best food.
