Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí and La Selva
1Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí and La Selva
Base · 2–3 nights
The practical rainforest base: river trips, guides, supplies and access to La Selva Biological Station. Stay outside the functional town if dawn birds matter more than restaurant choice.

Braulio Carrillo National Park
2Braulio Carrillo National Park
Heredia’s strongest nature stop, split between the wet, accessible Quebrada González trails and the colder Volcán Barva hiking sector. Treat it as forest immersion rather than a guaranteed volcano-view day.

Vara Blanca and Cinchona
3Vara Blanca and Cinchona
Base · 2 nights
A properly dramatic highland corridor of strawberries, mist, roadside waterfalls and cold air. It earns an overnight if you want weather flexibility; on a bad day, views simply disappear.

Base · 1–2 nights
Choose this rural belt for rafting, tubing and farm visits rather than another generic canopy tour. Finca Surá-style agroecology visits make the pineapple, cacao and spice economy tangible.

Base · 2 nights
A useful first or last-night base near SJO, with the market, central park, Fortín and Café Britt coffee tour. Come for everyday Central Valley life, not a polished historic core.

Short stop · 1 night
The quiet rural approach to Volcán Barva: coffee farms giving way to dairy country and cold mountain slopes. Best with a car and a tolerance for changeable roads and weather.

7San Rafael de Heredia and Monte de la Cruz
A low-commitment highland escape above the city, with forest walks, coffee scenery and occasional broad views. It works as a half-day or easy overnight, not as the centerpiece of a long trip.

Santa Bárbara and San Isidro
8Santa Bárbara and San Isidro
The least staged version of Heredia’s coffee-and-dairy belt: bakeries, roadside dairy products and cultivated-slope views. Go slowly and snack often; there is no single headline sight.

A quieter agricultural Sarapiquí base surrounded by plantations and rural birding roads. Pick it for a specific lodge or farm stay, not because it has more to do than Puerto Viejo or Chilamate.

4 nights / 5 daysHeredia Centro and Mercedes Norte (2 nights) → Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí and La Selva (2 nights)
The minimum split that works. Use Heredia for the market, coffee and a straightforward highland half-day, then commit the remaining time to Sarapiquí for either La Selva or a river trip. Do not try to wedge Vara Blanca into four nights.

7 nights / 8 daysHeredia Centro and Mercedes Norte (2 nights) → Vara Blanca and Cinchona (2 nights) → Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí and La Selva (2 nights) → Chilamate and the Sarapiquí River corridor (1 night)
The best first visit for self-drivers. Start with coffee-country city life, give misty Vara Blanca enough time to absorb bad weather, then descend to Puerto Viejo for La Selva or guided birding before finishing with rafting and a farm stay around Chilamate.

For hikers, birders and travelers who would rather wait out rain than change hotels. The Barva stop gives you a serious shot at the Volcán Barva sector of Braulio Carrillo; Vara Blanca gets a weather buffer; and five lowland nights leave room for La Selva, rafting, a farm-and-food visit and slow dawn wildlife walks.
