Paro Town, Rinpung Dzong and Ta Dzong
Short stop · 1 day
The practical base and cultural core: cross the traditional bridge to Rinpung Dzong, then climb to Ta Dzong for the National Museum. It is compact enough for a half-day, but it earns its place as the valley’s best base rather than as an all-day city break.
Ramthangka and Tiger’s Nest
Short stop · 1 day
This is the trailhead for Paro Taktsang, the cliffside monastery that justifies the early start and the long uphill day. Treat it as a serious altitude hike with steep final stairs, not a quick scenic walk.
Kyichu, Lango and the East-Bank Temples
Short stop · 0.5–1 days
Kyichu Lhakhang is one of Bhutan’s oldest and most important temples, while nearby Dungtse Lhakhang rewards visitors who look past its plain exterior for its painted interiors. This is the right quiet half-day after Tiger’s Nest.
Drukgyel and the Northern Farming Valley
Short stop · 0.5–1 days
At the open northern end of Paro Valley, Drukgyel Dzong and the surrounding fields feel more rural than central Paro; clear weather can bring Jomolhari into view. Add the Choedin Village Loop if you want a useful three-hour walk rather than another monument stop.
Bondey, Dopshari and Dzongdrakha
Short stop · 1 day
This quieter western valley circuit leads to Dzongdrakha Goenpa, a cliffside monastery reached by a manageable walk, plus village scenery around Bondey. It is a worthwhile low-key alternative for travelers who cannot take on Tiger’s Nest, but it is not an equal substitute.
Chele La and Kila Goenpa
Short stop · 1 day
The high road to 3,988 m Chele La is for a genuinely clear day, not an itinerary box to tick. Walk down toward the cliff-perched Kila Goenpa nunnery rather than only photographing the prayer flags at the pass.
Zuri Dzong and the Ta Dzong Ridge
Short stop · 1 day
A roughly three-hour ridge walk above town gives broad views over Rinpung Dzong and the valley without requiring a full-day commitment. It is the sensible acclimatization hike before Tiger’s Nest.
Jele Dzong and the High Eastern Ridge
Short stop · 1 day
This is Paro’s more demanding ridge day: a sustained climb from the valley toward a small hilltop dzong at high altitude. Save it for fit walkers with an extra day, not for an afternoon after sightseeing.
Essential first visit
3 nights / 4 daysParo Town, Rinpung Dzong and Ta Dzong (1 day) → Ramthangka and Tiger’s Nest (1 full day) → Kyichu, Lango and the East-Bank Temples (1 day)
The minimum Paro itinerary that does not feel rushed: central culture on arrival, a protected full day for Tiger’s Nest, then a quieter temple circuit. Stay in one Paro Valley hotel throughout; moving rooms would only waste time.
Plan this routeThe weather-proof Paro classic
4 nights / 5 daysParo Town, Rinpung Dzong and Ta Dzong (1 day) → Ramthangka and Tiger’s Nest (1 full day) → Kyichu, Lango and the East-Bank Temples (half day) → Drukgyel and the Northern Farming Valley (half day) → Chele La and Kila Goenpa (1 full day)
This is the strongest all-round Paro plan. It gives Tiger’s Nest the time it needs, pairs temples with the northern valley efficiently, and reserves a clear-weather day for Chele La. If cloud or wind makes the pass a bad bet, swap in Dzongdrakha and the Zuri ridge instead.

5 nights / 6 daysParo Town, Rinpung Dzong and Ta Dzong (1 day) → Kyichu, Lango and the East-Bank Temples (1 day) → Bondey, Dopshari and Dzongdrakha (1 day) → Drukgyel and the Northern Farming Valley (1 day) → Ramthangka and Tiger’s Nest (1 full day)
For travelers who prefer village walks, temples and a farmhouse meal to collecting every landmark at speed. Start gently, use the lower-effort Dzongdrakha walk as preparation, and leave Tiger’s Nest until you have acclimatized. A rural upper-valley overnight can add atmosphere, but it is optional rather than logistically necessary.
Plan this routeParo for committed walkers
6 nights / 7 daysZuri Dzong and the Ta Dzong Ridge (1 day) → Paro Town, Rinpung Dzong and Ta Dzong (1 day) → Ramthangka and Tiger’s Nest (1 full day) → Drukgyel and the Northern Farming Valley (1 day) → Chele La and Kila Goenpa (1 full day) → Jele Dzong and the High Eastern Ridge (1 full day)
A week only makes sense here if walking is the point. Zuri provides a sensible first acclimatization hike; Tiger’s Nest follows after a quieter culture day; Choedin Village Loop adds an easier rural walking day; and Jele Dzong is saved for the end, when fitness, weather and altitude tolerance are proven.
