First visit? Stay in Le Marais.
Le Marais gives a first-time visitor the best balance of central walks, strong Métro access, real evening life and proximity to Notre-Dame, the Seine, Pompidou and the Louvre. It is busy and pricey, but less sterile than the Louvre hotel zone and more lively at night than the 7th.

Avoid sleeping near Immediate Gare du Nord and Gare de l'Est station blocks, The busiest Pigalle and Boulevard de Clichy blocks, Champs-Élysées and the immediate avenue corridor, Far-out hotels beyond the Boulevard Périphérique chosen solely for price. Useful for an early train, but many visitors find the streets noisy, hectic and less comfortable late at night. The Canal Saint-Martin side is generally a better nearby compromise.
